Dancing Through History: A Ballet Mural in Morlaix, Brittany

Returning to Morlaix

Some places leave a lasting impression, and for me, Morlaix in Brittany, France, is one of them.

After first visiting the city in 2023, I was invited back to create another large-scale mural. Returning to Morlaix felt special from the moment I arrived. Despite being a relatively small town, it has a unique character, beautiful architectural lines, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes visitors feel at home.

I would like to thank Zag once again for the invitation and for making this second visit possible. The warmth and humility of the local community made the entire experience memorable.

Choosing the Right Concept

Before travelling to France, I prepared three different mural concepts.

After reviewing the options, I decided to move forward with the ballet theme. My goal was to create something that everyone could connect with, regardless of age. I wanted the mural to be accessible, positive, and immediately understandable to anyone walking through the area.

The final composition features four ballerinas captured in different poses and movements. Their colours gradually transition from more intense and vibrant tones to softer and lighter shades, creating a sense of rhythm and progression.

Together, the figures almost appear to perform a dance sequence across the wall, transforming a static surface into a visual performance full of movement and energy.

An Unexpected Discovery

What makes this mural particularly meaningful is something I only discovered after the painting was completed.

Through communication between the festival organisers and the son of the woman who had lived in the building for most of her life, an extraordinary story emerged.

We learned that she had been one of the first ballet dancers in the region—possibly the very first—and had dedicated her life to ballet. Throughout the years, she inspired generations of young people and helped shape the local dance community.

At the time I selected the ballet concept, I had absolutely no knowledge of this history.

The connection was entirely coincidental, yet it felt incredibly significant.

When Art Finds Its Own Story

One of the most fascinating aspects of public art is that sometimes a mural develops a deeper meaning than the artist could ever have planned.

What started as a celebration of movement, colour, and beauty unexpectedly became a tribute to a woman whose life was devoted to dance.

When her son discovered the mural’s theme and the story behind its creation, he was genuinely surprised by the coincidence. The fact that a ballet mural had been painted on the very building connected to one of the area’s most influential ballet figures seemed almost impossible to believe.

Moments like these remind me why public art is so powerful. Murals become part of the places where they live, connecting people, memories, and stories in ways that cannot be predicted.

A Mural for Everyone

More than anything, I wanted this artwork to bring joy to the local community.

Whether viewed by children, dancers, residents, or visitors, the mural was designed to be something that everyone could appreciate. Through movement, colour, and expression, the ballerinas create a visual language that speaks across generations.

Returning to Morlaix was an unforgettable experience, and discovering the unexpected connection between the artwork and the building’s history made the project even more meaningful.

Sometimes art finds its own destination.

Conclusion

This mural in Morlaix is not only a celebration of dance but also a reminder of how closely art and history can become intertwined. What began as a personal artistic choice evolved into an unexpected tribute to a woman who left a lasting mark on her community through ballet.

For that reason, this mural will always hold a special place among the projects I have created.
